Where to Get Free School Lunch, Breakfast in Topeka Area for Summer

Summer begins this week for most students in the Topeka area, but there will be a slight gap between the last day of school and the start of most school districts’ free summer lunch programs.

Through the federally-funded USDA Summer Food Service Program, several schools will continue to provide free lunches — and in some schools, breakfasts — to all children ages 1 to 18, regardless of regardless of their income level.

The free summer meals program had been extended to cover all students throughout the school year at the start of the pandemic in spring 2020. The program was later extended to also cover the 2020-21 and 2021 school years -22.

While several schools will continue to serve free summer lunches through the end of July 2022, Congress has not provided funding to continue the universal free lunch program during the regular school year. Parents will need to reapply for a free or reduced lunch during the 2022-23 school year.

In the meantime, here’s where Topeka-area kids can continue to get free meals in the summer of 2022.

Where can Topeka area kids get free meals?

Each district has different meal dates and locations, and most will have a gap of a few days or weeks between summer meal programs and the end/beginning of the school year.

Not all schools are free lunch locations, but any child can get free lunches at any lunch site, whether or not they attend that school or district.

In most cases, children will need to be present to receive free meals.
