Chicago, IL (December 9, 2021) – Parishes and schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Friday, December 10, Saturday, December 11, and Sunday, December 12. This year marks the 490th anniversary of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, when Hispanic Catholics and other groups celebrate the multiple appearances of the Virgin Mary to Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, an Aztec convert to Catholicism.
Between December 9 and 12, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared several times to Saint Juan Diego. During an apparition, she asked him to bring a request to the Archbishop of Mexico City for a church to be built in her honor. This garment is now on display in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City and attracts millions of pilgrims each year.
