California’s Leading School District Leverages Naviance by PowerSchool to Improve College Readiness for the Migrant Student Population

Counselors and Educators Ensure Student Equity and Success After High School with Naviance by PowerSchool

FOLSOM, CA, January 19, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–PowerSchool (NYSE:PWSC), the leading cloud-based software provider for K-12 education, is proud to support the continued growth of Napa Valley Unified’s migrant education program School District (USD) with the use of Naviance by PowerSchool. Hand-selected by Napa Valley USD, Naviance serves a sizable segment of the school’s 17,000 students, many of whom are part of its federally-sponsored migrant education program, seeking to step back and settle goals for their life after high school.

Naviance is deployed as the base of its four-week college, career and life (CCLR) readiness program called “Adelante” (meaning “forward” in Spanish). In the program, Naviance is used to provide students with interactive lessons on acquiring academic and professional knowledge, and to create post-secondary plans aligned with student strengths and interests. Additionally, Naviance helps increase student accountability by tracking course completion.

“Our students are often pulled in many different directions, but thanks to the Naviance program, our students are now able to think critically about their school work and their future, essentially providing them with ‘me time’ dedicated to reflect on their life after high school,” said Martha Calderon, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) coordinator and EL teacher at Napa Valley High School. “Bringing Naviance into our curriculum has given students the opportunity to shape their future, further illustrating how edtech partners like PowerSchool can help students achieve their career goals after high school. .

Naviance is the nation’s leading college, career, and life-readiness platform, equipping more than 10 million students at 40% of U.S. high schools with skills they can leverage — to discover and then achieve – their future goals. After the first year of using Naviance at Napa Valley USD, 56% of students said their plans after high school had changed. Calderon credits the work they’ve done around the logistics of paying for a college education — particularly teaching students ways to make a college education more affordable. After completing the program, 57% of students said they wanted to have follow-up conversations with their school counselor.

“It was one of those data points that I celebrated as a teacher. For a student to be successful in their academic and career goals, there needs to be a strong relationship with the counselor,” Calderon says.

The Migrant Education Program provides services to students and families who depend on agriculture for their livelihood and move frequently in search of work. About 50% of Calderon students are of Latin American descent.

“Naviance by PowerSchool’s application to the district’s migrant education program is another example of how the integration of education technology can positively impact the lives of students at all levels, and in this case, students who are traditionally underserved,” said Marcy Daniel, Product Manager of PowerSchool. “It is essential that teachers, counselors and students have reliable solutions that create both collaboration and the opportunity to explore what is possible. We are very proud to partner with Napa Valley USD to provide key resources enabling students to pursue both their educational and professional goals. We look forward to seeing what these students will accomplish in the future.”

In addition to Naviance by PowerSchool, Napa Valley USD also uses PowerSchool Unified Talent and PowerSchool Unified Insights Powered by Hoonuit. These solutions allow the district to seamlessly conduct and manage teacher assessments, conduct truly comprehensive assessments that address unfinished learning, predict enrollment, and visualize the geographic context of their data.
