AT&T, Museum of Science and Technology, Tech4Kidz, and Syracuse University Partner to Launch Syracuse’s First Digital Literacy Summer Program to Help Bridge the Diversity Gap in Tech
The AT&T ‘Cuse Digital Experience, presented by the Museum of Science and Technology, Tech4Kidz and Syracuse University will host 110 local students from Syracuse City School for a free digital literacy and STEM summer program to help solve digital divide issues in Syracuse
Syracuse, NY – July 2022 – AT&T, the Museum of Science and Technology (MOST), Tech4Kidz, and Syracuse University have partnered to create the city’s first free digital literacy and education summer program. region, designed to address issues of equality in technology education and to support students impacted by the digital divide. The AT&T’ Cuse Digital Experience is designed to encourage more underserved and diverse students to enter the field of technology, an industry that has long faced a pervasive diversity divide. The program will provide more than 110 underrepresented students in the City of Syracuse School District in grades 4-8 the opportunity to learn digital literacy and readiness skills through unique immersive technology-driven experiences , while encouraging them to explore a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) educational and professional paths. The free program was made possible with financial support and programming collaboration from AT&T as part of the company’s three-year, $2 billion national commitment to help bridge the digital divide and homework gap.

The AT&T ‘Cuse Digital Experience will be organized in two parts. The first part of the program will be hosted by Tech4kids and faculty from Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies (iSchool) in conjunction with the City of Syracuse School District for 80 students in grades 4 through Grade 6 attending Summer School to provide additional digital literacy learning in a unique and fun way to engage students. The program will take place at Frazer PreK-8 School and Bellevue Elementary School August 1-5 (Session 1) and August 8-12 (Session 2) from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. The second part of the program will be hosted by MOST and teachers from iSchool at Syracuse University Monday, August 22 through Friday, August 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Innovative Museum for public school students in grades 6-8 year.
During the two segments of the program, students will learn a wide range of digital literacy skills, including cybersecurity, social media use, basics of computer coding, keyboarding skills, artificial intelligence and the search for new facts. Students will also learn how technology can be used for good and community development by creating solutions and discovering creative uses to solve issues affecting young people in the region, such as digital citizenship. The AT&T’ Cuse Digital Experience will also connect students to team-based coding projects designed to make a difference in their schools and community, while giving them hands-on experience developing their own technology. Both programs will conclude with a digital demo day to showcase their final digital projects, which will feature student-created avatars in the digital world, addressing issues of digital citizenship and online safety.
To eliminate economic barriers, the program is freeand lunch, snacks, and transportation are provided. To register, Syracuse-area youth and their parents should visit www.most.org/digital-experience and complete the application. The program is open to Syracuse City School District students in 6th gradee up to 8e. No prior technology experience is required. All applicants will be notified of the review process and potential acceptance prior to the start of the program.
