Atlanta Braves’ Dansby Swanson Joins Vanderbilt Athletics HOF

Dansby Swanson has just had a great year. He won a World Series title with the Atlanta Braves, got engaged and was inducted into the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday for his role on the 2014 team that won the inaugural World Series. academic of the program.

Swanson wasn’t expecting the news when athletic director Candice Lee reached out. He thought he was too young for any hall of fame or there might be a waiting period.

Now, Swanson becomes the ninth person associated with Vanderbilt baseball in the school’s hall of fame, cementing his name among the all-time greats.

“It couldn’t be a better year, this year 2021,” Swanson said. “The World Series and now this and obviously doing it in college, the unique thing about when we did it here was just kind of the story behind never having won a men’s national title and to kind of be the first and really break through with that legacy, that was really a special, special feeling. Professional baseball is a whole different kind of animal, but creating that legacy of Vanderbilt baseball is really cool.

Swanson credited Lee, with whom he has a close relationship, with trying to bridge the gap between academics and athletics at Vanderbilt, where there have always been inherent tensions.

“Athletics can thrive when the school is really supportive of the programs vision, especially financially, and I think they’re really starting to take off with that,” Swanson said. “Especially understanding that athletics doesn’t take anything away from academics, there’s a beautiful marriage between the two and there are so many other schools that are doing it really well and I think they’re kind of starting to reach their rhythm with it.”

Swanson credited baseball coach Tim Corbin with placing him on the “Mount Rushmore” of baseball coaches, and noted Corbin’s rare ability to build winning programs year after year while emphasizing high character. .

Earlier Friday, Corbin praised Swanson’s growth as a leader beyond his ability on the pitch.

“It’s been great fun watching him grow as a leader in this organization because you can see we have conversations throughout the year whether it’s text or call and he’s very attached to that,” Corbin said. “He’s about the right things, he’s a good player and I felt like that would be the case with him but he’s very consistent in his actions and I’m glad he got to enjoy something at the end of the year.”
